Western Japan mainline steams in 1973, mainly from the Kansai Main Line and the Sanin Main Line. The Sanin Main Line is the major railway line of the Sanin region, running along the Japan Sea. The Kansai main line, despite its name, for much of its length is very local and quite mountainous with some steep gradient sections. The line was originally built in the 1890's by Kansai Railway. These lines were reasonably accessible from Osaka where I lived at that time.
