4-6-2 Pacific Class C53 is the Japanese only ever made 3 cylinder locomotive based on the American designed C52 (ALCO imported in 1926). 97 were built from 1928 to 1929. "Tsubame (Swallow)", the flagship express between Tokyo and Osaka along with "Hato (pigeon)" was also hauled by C53. One of C53, C5343 was converted to have an air-smoothed casing in 1934. Unfortunately due to the difficulty to maintain the 3 cylinder engine (due to the complexity of the structure) and suffering from some design related troubles, the decision had been made that Japanese engine design is only focused on 2 cylinder engines.
